First actions of a first aider – Helping someone who has suffered a burn.

When we provide first aid we must always ask for permission to help, and if someone is unconscious ask anyway and then assume you have permission, we call this “implied permission”.

Wherever possible place the burned surface area of the person under clean running water for at least 20 minutes.

Do not remove any clothing that is on top of the skin at the time of the incident .

If it is an arm or leg you can then place the burned area loosely in a cling film sheet, do not place this tightly.

The severity and seriousness of a burn will depend on the age of the person, how large the area that has been burned and also how deep the burn is. If in doubt seek medical help.

Severe burns can lead to shock which is also a medical emergency requiring emergency help. Call 999 or 12.
